Board members raised the item after the personnel committee reported prior executive-session discussion about interim arrangements as the district prepares for Sharon's anticipated departure June 30. The personnel committee earlier recommended placing an interim-superintendent appointment on the consent agenda and proposed payment of up to 50 vacation days to Sharon under her administrative contract; those personnel items were discussed alongside the new-business motions.
The board voted by voice on the May 5 motions to add the items to new business and then on the substantive motions. The minutes record the motions being approved by voice (“All those in favor say ‘I’”); an explicit roll-call tally was not read into the record for the CES retention or the authorization to negotiate the interim contract.
During discussion members explained the need to clarify a procedural ambiguity from the prior meeting and to confirm that the search would be conducted with CES, a district consultant. A board member said the clarification was needed because minutes from the prior meeting left unclear whether an earlier motion had been formally seconded and recorded.
The board also agreed that, once designated, further search-related consultations and candidate interviews will proceed under executive-session procedures as required by statute and guidance for search committees. CES proposed a schedule of initial consultation dates in May to begin focus groups and planning; the board asked members to respond to scheduling invitations so the work can proceed.
Next steps: the board will finalize negotiations for the interim appointment through the chair and personnel committee, proceed with CES-led search activities (focus groups and candidate screening), and schedule executive sessions for interviews as needed. The contract with CES was ratified during the meeting and will be posted with meeting materials per the board’s reference to the signed agreement.
