Superintendent announces ad hoc 'Civility and Respect' committee; district outlines three-phase framework

Rocky Hill ' Superintendent Dr. Zto announced formation of an ad hoc Civility and Respect committee and interim assistant superintendent Dr. Diaz summarized an initial three-phase framework during the Oct. 16 Board of Education meeting.
Dr. Diaz said the framework begins with a needs assessment (reviewing current policies and practices), then moves to intentional education (age-appropriate assemblies, curriculum and partnerships) and finishes with a community outreach campaign emphasizing that "words matter." "We need to make sure that we stay at that forefront and letting kids know, you know, these mean-spirited behaviors ... will not be tolerated in our schools," Dr. Diaz said.
Dr. Zto said the committee will be broader than statutory compliance with state safe-school climate rules and will focus on preparing students for civil participation in society. He said the committee will generate age-appropriate guidance, programming and community engagement to reinforce respectful behavior across schools and families.
Board members expressed support and thanked staff for earlier work on the framework. The board did not take any formal vote beyond the announcement; administration said it will continue detailed planning and community outreach.
