Rocky Hill ' During audience participation at the Oct. 16 Board of Education meeting, parent Jenna Milman raised concerns about the district's decision to eliminate the existing foundational math program at GMS and to replace it with a redefined support model.
Milman said her older daughter had benefited from the foundational math program for two years and that the program's removal at the start of the academic year left families and some teachers unsure how the new, evidence-based support will be implemented. She said the change was explained as aligning with the state's safe-school climate and restorative-practices law, but that the statute is not a strict mandate on how to organize evidence-based interventions.
"This change is very much still in process," Milman told the board, noting consultants and training are being used to redesign supports and that schedules are still being adjusted. She asked the board to increase parent and community engagement before final decisions are implemented and to pause rapid operational changes for students she described as especially affected ("COVID kindergarteners").
Board members acknowledged the concern, and Mrs. Duran (district administrator) and others said there has been ongoing dialogue with parents and staff; the board did not take a formal vote on the issue during the meeting. Milman concluded by urging a measured, collaborative approach to ensure supports are effective for students.
