The Maynard School Committee adopted an updated mask-guidance policy (ER/ECFA) on Nov. 21 following a second-reading discussion and a roll-call vote.
Supporters, including Committee member Hillary Gripitz, framed the policy as a modest, protective measure for vulnerable people and said it places final authority with nurses and health staff. Gripitz said the policy "shows a little support for the vulnerable while literally sacrificing nothing on the part of the majority," and urged adoption to protect those at risk from serious COVID-related complications.
Committee members discussed whether nurses preferred retaining an explicit policy or whether existing clinical practice and nurse discretion were sufficient. District staff said the nurses had reviewed the draft language and would be comfortable if the committee either adopted the policy or left the matter as a standing practice under nurse authority.
The committee moved and carried the motion to adopt the recommended policy by roll call. The transcript records Alexis and Hillary saying they were "in favor" and Maro stating "no"; the motion carried.
Next steps: the policy will be added to the committee’s policy repository and implemented through nurse and health-team procedures; staff also noted any future policy votes will be tracked and updated as personnel change.
