The Charles City Council set a public hearing for April 6 on the proposed property tax levy after staff identified a debt-service number correction tied to bridge loan payments and confirmed the city’s employee-benefits balance.
A staff member explained the change was not an increase to the levy rate but a correction in debt-service accounting related to the Charlie Western Bridge payments; staff reallocated some employee-benefits figures to preserve a healthy balance. “The employee benefits balance still at $640,000, which is almost 50% of what we spend in a year,” staff said.
Council approved a procedural resolution to set the hearing date; staff noted the auditor’s office issues levy notices and that the city’s proposed maximum must be submitted by the statutory deadline for mailings. The public hearing will be part of the council’s regular meeting on April 6.
Why it matters: Setting the hearing begins the statutory public-notice process for the tax levy; the hearing gives residents an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed budget and tax impact.
What’s next: Staff will finalize documentation for the levy notice and post materials in advance of the April 6 hearing.
