School officials say a draft FY26 budget will be ready Sept. 30 as town discussions continue

At the Sept. 9 meeting School Committee members were told the district will prepare a draft FY26 budget projection by Sept. 30 as staff and the Town discuss funding options.
James Kiely, speaking as a district staff member, said he is preparing two budget scenarios and intends to present a draft to the budget subcommittee by the end of September. Kiely asked committee members to delay final decisions about funding sources until the draft is available so the committee and the Town can consider options together.
Kiely told the Committee several steps will take place concurrently: the budget subcommittee will meet, the full School Committee will discuss the draft, and staff will engage with the Town to understand possible flexibility on funding. He said the district has increased budgets about 3.5% annually over the past 10 years and that last year the Town requested the district limit growth to about 3%.
Committee members did not vote on budget adoption at the meeting; staff said the draft will "set the stage" for subsequent discussions and choices about funding sources.
