Dartmouth schools honor staff and spotlight Quinn School peer leaders

The Dartmouth School Committee opened its Feb. 10 meeting by presenting Green Apple Awards to staff members nominated by colleagues: Michael Capello, Daniel Lefebvre, Hilaria Sousa and Cheryle Kamm. The committee also recognized Kathleen Thornton, the district athletic trainer, for being named MIAA Trainer of the Year.
During the "Spotlight on Kids," Quinn School Principal Dr. Audra Thomas and Assistant Principal Stephanie Yermalovich described Quinn’s community partnerships, which the district ties to its strategic plan’s Family and Community Engagement focus. They highlighted partnerships with local programs, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Dartmouth High School and a fifth-grade peer leader program that the district said has about 42 peer leaders and has run for approximately ten years under outreach worker Tiffany Martin.
Several fifth-grade peer leaders described why they wanted to serve and what the role means to them. Separately, the committee approved two consent-agenda travel items for DHS ensembles to attend WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.
The recognitions and student presentation were framed as district efforts to connect families, community partners and student leadership with school programming.
