Memorial school project stays on schedule, district reports; abatement and long‑lead equipment noted

Regional School District 13’s board received an update on the memorial school construction project during its Dec. 8 meeting. Owner’s representatives reported completion of Phase 2 PCR (demolition and hazardous‑material approvals) with the state and said abatement work is expected to begin in January.
Project staff said the contractors, architects and owner’s representative met to reduce an initially high demolition/abatement estimate and that value engineering efforts have helped keep the program on schedule and within budget. A scheduling meeting will be arranged to monitor milestones closely.
District staff noted certain materials and equipment have long lead times: the switchgear and generators were cited as items with roughly 50‑week delivery windows, requiring early purchase orders. The state’s final design approval meeting on Jan. 22 was identified as a key upcoming date; that approval will allow the district to go to bid for those construction phases.
Building committee minutes also discussed preserving existing artwork and mosaics for placement in the new building, coordinating local planning and zoning approvals (Middlefield planning & zoning approved the site plan with lighting conditions), and approving third‑party reviewers for code and structural review on behalf of the towns.
Board members said they will continue to communicate progress through newsletters and the committee process as the project advances to abatement and the next bidding stage.
