Hoosac Valley Regional committee launches policy audit, details maintenance work and staffing ahead of school year

The Hoosac Valley Regional School Committee described several operational preparations for the school year at its Aug. 26 meeting, including a district-wide policy audit, handbook revisions, and facility maintenance updates.
Erin Milne said the district will undertake a comprehensive audit of its policies with assistance from the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents and the Massachusetts Association of School Committees; the committee has already begun reviewing documents and asked subcommittees to work through updates during the year. Colleen Byrd and Regina Diesz presented updates to the high school policy manual, including clarifications to graduation requirements and the addition of a reference to a School Resource Officer in policy text.
On facilities, Robert Tetlow reported progress on elementary and middle school site work — driveway and playground improvements — and interior work. He raised a concern about a leaking middle-school gym ceiling near a drain; contractors are scheduled to inspect the issue under warranty. Tetlow noted that, while two gym roofs are new, other roofs may need replacement in about five years, and that HVAC control upgrades revealed additional faults, including valves and missing boilers that will require future bidding.
Superintendent Aaron Dean said principals have distributed schedules and transportation information and that staffing is “almost” fully complete, with new hires in a mentoring program.
Next steps: The policy audit will proceed through subcommittee review with MASS/MASC support; contractors will inspect the gym leak and administration will continue staffing and facilities work ahead of the school year.
