Tower council sets Hoodoo Point rates, approves hires, bids and delinquent-utility levy

The Tower City Council on Oct. 14 approved a package of routine actions, including setting campground rates for Hoodoo Point, hiring municipal staff, awarding a propane contract and adopting a resolution to certify delinquent utility accounts.
Councilor Kevin Norby moved to set Hoodoo Point Campground rates for the 2025 season at $3,600 for the seasonal rate, $55 for the daily rate, $35 for a tent-site daily rate and $10 per occurrence for dumping in the holding tank. Councilor Josh Zika seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
The council also approved Change Order 1 and Change Order 2 for the city’s water treatment facility project and approved Pay Application 1 and Pay Application 2 for that project after motions by Councilors Joe Morin, Bob Anderson and Josh Zika; those motions passed unanimously. The items were presented as routine project-management steps; no additional project funding was adopted at the meeting.
On personnel, the council approved job descriptions for the Ambulance Director and Maintenance Foremen (with a requested deletion in the Ambulance Director job description) and hired Olivia Haavisto as a maintenance assistant effective Oct. 14, 2024, at a starting rate of $21 per hour. The council also authorized posting a Seasonal Maintenance Worker position for the 2025 winter season. In separate action, Councilor Joe Morin moved to hire Jordan Purkat as an Emergency Medical Responder for the Tower Area Ambulance Service; that hire was approved unanimously.
Sealed bids for propane were opened; the council accepted Superior Fuel’s low bid at $1.229 per gallon for the next two heating seasons following a motion by Councilor Zika and a second by Councilor Morin.
On finance, Councilor Morin moved to approve Resolution 2024-013, “A Resolution Making Levy And Assessment Against Taxable Properties For Delinquent Water and Sewer Accounts,” which the council approved unanimously. Other routine approvals included authorization for the clerk/treasurer to dispose of an obsolete piano at the Civic Center and authorization for the mayor and Councilor Morin to negotiate a police contract with Breitung Township. The council adjourned at 7:09 p.m.
