Barrow County launches Peach Education Tax Credit drive to fund agricultural programs

Barrow County leaders on Tuesday launched a local effort to use Georgia's Peach Education Tax Credit to fund agricultural programs in the district.
Dr. Woodard briefed the board on the program'which lets taxpayers redirect state income-tax liability to approved local education initiatives in exchange for a dollar'for'dollar state tax credit'and described the district's initial application to secure up to $75,000 for ag programming. "This program is going to keep funds invested locally," Dr. Woodard said, adding the district plans to use early funds to update farm equipment, enhance classroom and lab resources, expand FFA opportunities, and support workforce-readiness certificates such as OSHA-10 for ag students.
Officials said once the initial $75,000 target is reached the district can apply for additional grants and that they will run a communications campaign (flyers, social media, postcards) and outreach to local businesses, Farm Bureau and community organizations. Board members noted donors need not be local to contribute; Dr. Woodard said out'of'county businesses can also designate funds to Barrow County Schools.
Next steps: school staff will roll out materials to promote the tax-credit opportunity and accept applications; staff reported the district already received its first donation by the time of the meeting.
