Board approves Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation wayside marker for 20 North Loudoun Street

Michael Gianfrito, acting chief of visitor services and interpretation with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, presented the proposal and said the marker "mirrors the other" wayside markers the foundation has placed in the city and is part of the Long Road to Freedom project linking Civil War sites and civil-rights history. Gianfrito said the marker text was drafted by Shenandoah University professor Jonathan Noyales and that the marker will be sited on the courthouse lawn opposite an existing monument.
Board members asked whether the marker would match the recently installed marker in style and placement; Gianfrito confirmed it would. After discussion, a board member moved to "approve BAR26-2 as presented"; the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor, with no opposition recorded.
The approval is for the marker's installation as presented; staff and the applicant did not identify further design changes required at the meeting. The foundation indicated it will coordinate final placement and any necessary mounting details with city staff before installation.
