Board approves budget assumptions and 2027–28 calendar, dissolves several committees and proposes new special committees
Summary
The New Canaan Board adopted FY2027 budget assumptions and the 2027–28 district calendar by unanimous votes, voted to sunset several standing and special committees, and held first readings for new resources & facilities and curriculum special committee charters.
At its Dec. 15 meeting the New Canaan Board of Education approved two major procedural items and reorganized several committee structures.
Budget assumptions and calendar: The board approved the budget assumptions and related priorities as a second reading and added a meeting with the Board of Finance on Feb. 3. The board also approved the 2027–28 district calendar as a second reading; the calendar preserves 182 instructional days and notes schedule adjustments (including Easter Monday and a long winter break). Both motions passed by unanimous voice vote.
Committees: The board voted to dissolve the BOE communications standing committee, the BOE resources standing committee and the BOE facilities special committee. The chair characterized the moves as consolidation of work and avoidance of redundancy as the town and district coordinate potential facilities planning and a municipal building committee. All committee dissolutions were approved unanimously.
First readings: The board presented (first reading only, no vote) a proposed BOE Resources & Facilities special committee charter (special committees are standard in year one per board bylaws) and a BOE Curriculum special committee charter to provide a formal venue for curriculum leadership to engage the board on program of studies, textbooks and K–12 deliverables. The board discussed that district staff (for example, Dr. Krenty) and cabinet members would be invited participants in committee meetings where appropriate.
What happens next: Final votes on the new committee charters are expected after the first reading period. The budget package will be unveiled on Jan. 5 as the next major procedural milestone; staff and consultants will continue to refine budget assumptions (including insurance projections) ahead of that presentation.
Ending: The board also used the meeting to make routine announcements and adjourned by unanimous vote.
