Sixth-graders ask East Haddam board to add volleyball net at Middle School

Sixth-grade students presented a request at the East Haddam School District Business & Planning subcommittee meeting on Feb. 4 asking for an outdoor volleyball net at the Middle School to expand recess and physical-education options.
The student presenters said they would fundraise to cover the equipment and installation. Committee members and staff discussed site specifics and confirmed the proposed location is on existing grass adjacent to the playground. Facilities staff indicated Public Works would handle site prep and digging for a sand pit around the net.
Staff provided an itemized cost estimate for the project: installation/site work approximately $1,580, the net $614, subtotal $2,194, tax $13.32, for a total of $2,333.32. The students told the committee they planned to raise the money via sales and other fundraising activities.
Kir Thompson, chair of the Business & Planning subcommittee, signaled support for the idea and said the subcommittee would place the item on the full board agenda. "I certainly approve big volleyball," Thompson said, adding that final approval depends on the full board and on whether the superintendent can find available funds in the current or next fiscal year.
Next steps: the subcommittee agreed to forward the proposal to the full board for a vote at next week’s meeting. If the board approves, the district will determine whether the cost can be absorbed in remaining funds for the year or must be included in the next fiscal-year capital plan.
