Des Moines County board adopts FY2026–27 budget and approves appropriations

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors adopted the county’s FY2026–27 budget during its April 21 meeting and approved a separate resolution setting appropriations for the coming fiscal year.
Cheryl Mac (finance) presented the proposed FY27 figures and told the board the proposed budget includes internal transfers and an anticipated ending fund balance of about 21.20 percent. The board discussed the term “deficit spending,” and the chair explained the county budgets to use reserves in worst-case scenarios rather than borrow, and that historically revenues come in higher and expenditures come in lower than budgeted.
On a separate motion the board approved a resolution listing total FY2026–27 appropriations of $41,651,191 and directed the county auditor to file the adopted budget and establish accounting records. The board also set a public hearing on the FY2026 budget amendment for May 12, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.
Votes: roll-call votes showing Sarah Marie, Jim Carrey, Tom Brooker and Shane Campbell voting in favor were recorded for the budget adoption, appropriations and the resolution setting the amendment hearing.
Why it matters: adoption of the budget and appropriations gives county officials the legal authority to spend against approved appropriations for the fiscal year starting July 1, 2026, and informs departments and vendors of available spending authority.
What’s next: the auditor will complete required filings and the board will hold the budget-amendment public hearing on May 12, 2026.
