The group asked the city to commit $20,000 toward production costs and some site preparation, and said Discover Shelby and other sponsors have offered partial support.
Organizers said the proposed site requires filling a low, soggy area and installing subsurface drainage before the event; they discussed using city‑owned fill, trucking relationships and potential county in‑kind support for barricades and staging. City staff and council members did not have final engineering plans and said they would meet with rodeo producers and Public Works staff to scope grading and drainage needs.
Council members pressed organizers on capacity and finances; Main Street estimated seating for 1,000–2,000 per night and projected 1,000–1,500 paid attendees per night in its preliminary P&L, plus school‑day participation and vendor revenues. Organizers requested a firm city commitment to lock the dates so they can begin marketing and solicit sponsorships.
The council moved, seconded and approved a motion to allow Main Street to proceed with planning and to provide the requested municipal partnership; council discussion indicated financial details and the timing of any cash transfer would be resolved in the next budget cycle or by the October event schedule. The vote was taken by voice and the motion carried.
Council members and staff said the city will meet with rodeo producers, review grading/drainage needs with Public Works, and work to identify in‑kind county resources and sponsorships. The council noted that final approval of any expenditures and the exact timing of payments will be decided in a later meeting or through the budget process.
