New Canaan Board sets June 16, 2026, as high school graduation date

The New Canaan Board of Education voted unanimously Feb. 2 to schedule New Canaan High School's graduation for Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., with a rain date of Wednesday, June 17.

The decision followed a district presentation about Policy 6010 and Connecticut's requirement that districts provide a minimum of 180 instructional days. Board members heard that New Canaan typically builds a 182-day calendar but may shorten the year to 180 days under emergency circumstances, and that selecting the 180th instructional day now preserves options if additional snow days occur.

The superintendent explained the rationale for an early decision: setting the ceremony on the 180th day gives the district and families certainty while leaving a one-day rain date and maintaining flexibility if weather forces further schedule changes. Board member Hugo moved to approve the date; Laura seconded the motion. The motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Board members had previously reviewed calendar constraints in Policy 6010, including the district's aim to avoid extending the school year beyond the third full week in June and to schedule professional learning days to favor full-week vacation periods where practicable. Members discussed the district's approach to weather events, noting the current practice of two-hour delays or cancellations and the state's guidance on counting partial days.

With the vote complete, the graduation date is set; the board did not need to take additional action unless subsequent calendar disruptions require a revision.

The board next moved on to a separate budget and enrollment discussion.
