Board tables decision on Iowa local government risk pool after members request five‑year cost data

The Pocahontas Area Comm School District board voted to table a participation agreement with the Iowa Local Government Risk Pool after members asked for additional historical cost analysis.

Administration explained that the pool caps heating costs and allows certain costs to be moved to the district’s management fund, which administrators described as healthier and less restrictive than the general fund. Karen reported that the district’s natural‑gas cost for the most recent year was $47,649 but that, with the pool, the district had recovered those costs this year; administrators and board members noted that premium costs for next year were estimated at about $78,000.

Board member Sheree asked administration to provide a five‑year comparison of what the district has paid for natural gas and the net premium cost so trustees could assess whether paying to shift costs to the management fund is worth the extra premium. Trustees agreed that more historical context is needed before approving the premium to shift the costs. The board moved to table the agreement until the next meeting to allow staff time to assemble that information; the motion to table carried by voice vote.
