Mansfield Human Rights Commission proposes charge rewrite, plans renewed public outreach

Jeannine Kanadia, chair of the Mansfield Human Rights Commission, opened the March 4 meeting and reported plans to resume public outreach in the spring, including restarting the Friday meet-and-greets at Betsy Patterson Square and hosting community conversations.
Mayor Antonia Moran suggested the commission formally rewrite its charge to reflect what members believe the body should encompass while noting that any change would require review and approval by Town Management and the Town Council. Kanadia said she will lead outreach to local venues, including contacting the Community Center about hosting conversations this spring and contributing copy to the next Mansfield Town Newsletter.
Commissioners agreed to practical outreach steps. Kanadia reported that Steven Ferigno remains interested in the Betsy Patterson Square tabling and that the group paused such activities during colder months. Moran suggested using the library branch in the parking garage as a warm location for winter outreach. Members also discussed ordering pens, notepads and human-rights booklets to distribute at events.
Resident recruitment and communications drew brief attention: Commissioner Jane Fried said she would like to host an event on racism to increase community discussion, and Commissioner Hasana Davis offered to collaborate. During public comment, resident Liz Vitullo asked the commission to advertise events in the town’s Daily Digest and said she would share information with others who might be interested in joining the commission.
The meeting ended with no vote on the commission’s charge; Kanadia said drafts and follow-up would go to Town Management and then to the Town Council for consideration.
