City staff and public-safety officials used the work session to highlight upcoming community events. A staff member said the Montgomery Zoo will return to the library for a walk-through indoor program on July 22 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. following strong turnout at the library’s summer-reading kickoff. The library’s summer-reading schedule continues daily except Fridays, with take-home activities on Fridays and a reading-log treasure box reward.
Council speakers also announced the World Police and Fire Games will take place in the Birmingham area beginning June 27, with multiple events across the region and a firefighter memorial downtown. Police staff previewed their explorers program, noting Calera cadets competed in a regional event and that advisers and dispatchers assisted with travel logistics.
Public-safety staff also announced a police–fire blood drive scheduled for the 19th and 20th; donors will receive a Police & Fire Games t-shirt and refreshments will be provided. The police speaker said the department’s case program, funded with opioid settlement funds, reached thousands of students and had been favorably received in presentations to state officials. The announcements were informational; no formal action was taken.
