District reports summer programming participation, pilots new literacy and curriculum materials
Summary
District directors reported more than 200 students participated in academic summer offerings, 105 K–5 students attended a four-week program and 175 students attended a 1-week ESSER-funded Acceleration Academy; literacy materials and several curriculum pilots will be piloted in 2024–25.
Directors of Teaching and Learning reported summer program participation levels and new instructional pilots to the Dartmouth School Committee on Aug. 26.
Ross Thibault (Director of Teaching and Learning, Secondary) and Katie Pavao (Director of Teaching and Learning, Elementary) described summer offerings that included credit recovery, extended school year, enrichment programs and athletic camps. Thibault said the academic programming served "well over 200 students"; Pavao said the four-week K–5 academic program had 105 participants. The district also ran a one-week Acceleration Academy funded by an ESSER grant that served 175 students in grades K–10 focused on targeted math and literacy skills.
Pavao and Thibault said new literacy instructional materials will be piloted during 2024–25; teachers previously vetted those materials during the 2023–24 school year and the district follows a curriculum adoption policy and rubrics to screen for bias. Curriculum pilots are also under way in middle- and high-school science, world language and math. The directors noted Project Time (a new program) and a new-hire mentoring program; new hires will be introduced at the next meeting.
What’s next: administrators will bring the recommended instructional materials and pilot results forward during the 2024–25 school year for committee review.
