Students praise Unified Sports program as district highlights Special Olympics partnership

Regional School District 08 showcased its Unified Sports program on March 11, presenting it as an inclusive athletics program affiliated with Special Olympics.
Athletic administration explained that Unified Sports pairs peer helpers with student-athletes for light competitive play and social development. The athletic director said the district has been a long-time participant and that teams compete in regional events, including state-level tournaments.
Students who participate described the program’s benefits. Evelyn, a high-school participant, said, “I really enjoy being a part of this team. It's just a very non-toxic sport and I love doing it. I think it's important because it provides equal opportunities for those who aren't able to participate in the other sports.” Another student, Risa Loma, said this was her first year and that the program helped her “build newer friendships.”
The board and administration noted rising peer-helper participation (from about 10 to more than 20 in a cited year) and encouraged board members to attend competitions and events to see the program in action.
Administration arranged for the student-athletes and coaches to take a group photo after their remarks.
