Board certifies compliance with Connecticut nutrition standards and begins multiple policy updates

The board of Regional School District 08 voted March 11 to certify compliance with the Connecticut Nutritional Standards for July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026, and approved a related exemption allowing the sale of noncompliant items at events that occur after the regular school day under stated conditions.

The certification reads in part that all food items offered for sale to students will comply with the Connecticut State Department of Education nutrition standards during the stated period. The board also approved a second motion to allow the sale of food items that do not meet those standards at qualifying after‑hours events (for example, soccer games or school plays) provided the sale is at the event location and not from vending machines or school stores.

Policy updates: administration presented multiple policies for first read or recommended deletion. Changes included folding a standalone solicitation-of-funds policy into the fundraising policy, updating the community-use-of-facilities policy (revised application process and fee schedule aligned with legislative changes), condensing an interscholastic-athletics policy to reflect the board’s philosophy, and removing redundant bylaws on electronic meeting participation now covered elsewhere in the policy book. The administration said these changes aim to modernize procedures and align policy language with current practice and the statutes.

Board members discussed the updates and asked questions about fee schedules, application processes for facility rentals and where fundraising language should live in policy. The items presented were first reads or recommendations for deletion; the board will consider final votes on amended policies in subsequent meetings.
