The Saugatuck City Council reviewed a proposal from the Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC) at its Oct. 9 workshop to develop trails, signage, a trailhead and parking and to restore habitat on the eastern portion of the city-owned Airport Property, with the possibility of establishing a conservation easement over steeper, wetland and floodplain areas.
City staff said ODC's legal team prepared a draft conservation easement and staff presented redline revisions for council feedback. Council members and committee work earlier prioritized evaluating the Airport Property, and staff said they would discuss the redline changes with ODC before returning an updated draft at the Oct. 23 workshop.
During public comment, Chris Peterson of Pleasant Street thanked the council for the conversation and asked for more clarity on costs associated with the proposal. Mayor Pro-Tem Baldwin also publicly thanked ODC for its help in the property review.
No final conservation easement or vote was taken. Staff will meet with ODC to resolve redline comments and provide an updated draft for council consideration at the Oct. 23 workshop.
Next steps: staff and ODC will continue negotiations on easement language, cost clarifications and site details and will present a revised easement draft to the council on Oct. 23.
