Teachers honored and students share Salmon River field‑trip at Portland School District board meeting

Portland — Trustees used the start of their June 2 meeting to recognize long‑serving staff and to hear student presentations.

Dr. Britton introduced two retirees: Esha, hired by the district in 2008, who was praised for years as a math teacher and a cross‑country/track coach and for athletic accomplishments earlier in life; and Lisa Giammatteo, hired in 1986, whose personnel file included decades of evaluations praising her sensitivity to students’ needs. "I just want to thank the Portland community for giving me the opportunity to work here," Lisa told the board, reflecting on 39 years in the district.

Student representative Liam Rowe was recognized for growth and steady service on the student senate; he said being the student representative had strengthened his resume and confidence.

Brownstone Intermediate students presented on a Salmon River field trip they took with Oak Hill program students. Presenters described activities including releasing salmon, fly fishing, field games and music; several students stressed the trip’s inclusion goals and the value of building friendships with students with disabilities. "When you go out of your way to include someone, it's not only really nice, but it gives those students a sense of belonging," student Grant said during the presentation.

The board also received a graduation invitation from valedictorian Lily Gatani and congratulated students and retirees. The district encourages families and community members to attend upcoming graduation events and student celebrations.

What’s next: No board action related to these items was required; recognitions and student reports were part of the meeting’s Spotlight agenda.
