Resident urges council to prioritize debt reduction and transparency

Gaultieri said, "According to recent budget figures...we have general obligations bonds of over 3.1 million with nearly 1.8 million more being transferred to other debts," and asked the council to provide a simple breakdown of total debt, interest costs and future obligations. He urged the council to prioritize needs over wants and to avoid borrowing for nonessential projects until current obligations are reduced.
Council members thanked Gaultieri for his remarks and acknowledged the need to make difficult budget decisions. The mayor and council also used the forum to announce a series of community events (Earth Day tree plantings, a veterans send-off, Make Ottumwa Shine volunteer cleanup and local golf tournaments). The meeting recessed for a brief break before going into closed session.
