Senior center executive director Danna Helvick told the commission the program runs nine routes and serves about 175 people per week. "We have nine routes that we have to fill every week. And they feed about 175 people a week that we provide meals for five days a week," Helvick said, urging the commission to help with volunteer coordination.
Commissioners discussed logistics and agreed staff would be on the clock during delivery weeks and would not be required to use paid time off. A motion to provide four one-week blocks per year staffed by city employees was moved and seconded; commissioners agreed staff will coordinate with department heads to schedule around peak work periods such as budget season.
Supporters noted the program offers both meals and welfare checks for homebound residents. The senior center and city staff will coordinate a sign-up approach through department communications to field volunteers and plan the first rotation.
The commission's approval focuses on volunteer coordination rather than a budget appropriation; if implementation requires overtime or paid replacements, staff will return with additional details.
