Alpharetta staff preview summer programs, history panels and City Hall Rotunda exhibit

A staff member reported that arts-and-culture programming is busy for summer, highlighting live-music match performances, several summer-camp drop-off sites and a high volume of community engagement across programs.

Staff said the department has partnered with a local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority on Juneteenth activities and is developing history panels for Farmhouse Overlook Park — the city’s first settlement site — in coordination with the Alpharetta Old Milton County Historical Society. The panels will be ADA-compliant and walk visitors through local historical sites, staff said.

Officials also described a six-month, reduced-size banners pilot (24 banners) called Artscapes; the pilot is intended to test a year-long banner program that would otherwise be regulated by city timing rules. Staff noted potential purchases of a small number of sculptures for the permanent collection are under review and that partners (including the Alpharetta Foundation and Maxwell) are being consulted about funding or stewardship.

Staff announced a special "art meets history" installation in the City Hall Rotunda. The exhibit will include two original Peter Max pieces that have been loaned from private collections; the installation will be open for limited hours during a drone show and on July 4, and will be displayed during normal City Hall hours thereafter.

Commissioners also heard updates about upcoming Spotlight theater and music programming — including Matilda’s Music — and about Paint the Town being moved to the fall to take advantage of foliage. The staff member closed by thanking the Arts Alpharetta team and noting the department’s work with partners to support events and installations.

Staff told commissioners that the Dazzled and Discord recommendations will be forwarded to Mayor and Council on July 14 for final approval and that installations would proceed after that action.
