America 250 Committee finalizes spring–summer event calendar, reports $67,700 in donations

The America 250 Committee met March 19, 2026, at the Clifford B. Green Memorial Center (and via Google Meet) to review fundraising and finalize a schedule of spring and summer community events tied to Brooklyn’s participation in the nation’s 250th anniversary observances. Amy Brosnan called the meeting to order at 4:03 p.m.
Rye Owen reported that donations to the Red, White & Blue campaign total $67,700 to date. Committee members then reviewed an events calendar that runs from late March through July. The March 28 “March 250” is set for Prince Hill Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with family activities including face painting, stickers provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution, food trucks, games, a medallion hunt, and photo opportunities with costumed characters.
Planned spring events include a Bingo fundraiser on April 12 (1–3 p.m.) at the Little Dipper Farm with prizes, a kids’ room and trivia; a Community Mural event on Earth Day, April 22, 6–7:30 p.m. at the Little Dipper Farm (rain or shine); and an Underground Railroad presentation by Dennis Landis on May 2 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church Meeting House, expected to run about 45 minutes with time for questions. The Last Green Valley will lead a Forage & History Hike at the Little Dipper Farm on May 16, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
Jordan Chenette reported that she and K. LaChapelle of the Brooklyn Schools PTO are organizing a Red, White & Blue Color Run for May 23; the kids’ race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., the overall location was not yet chosen, and the committee estimated needing 20 or more volunteers with earlier arrival for setup. An Israel Putnam reenactment is proposed for Flag Day and the minutes list the date as June 14, 2025; V. Corriveau is exploring sites (Putnam Elms or the Historical Society) and hopes to add a family art project. The committee should verify the year listed in the minutes for that item.
Planning for the July 4 Grand Finale at the Brooklyn Fairgrounds includes narrated trolley rides, inflatables, contests (hot dog/pizza eating, corn hole, watermelon-seed spitting), a 1776 Senior Social, a hobby-horse race/obstacle course, music and magic performances, a photo booth, a bike parade to start the event, and other family-friendly activities. Committee members discussed recruiting volunteers from groups such as the Boy Scouts and high school students and said a detailed event schedule is needed to coordinate logistics, per V. Corriveau.
