Committee OKs standing fundraiser for post‑grad special‑education program and accepts donations

The School Committee unanimously approved a standing fundraiser for the district’s post‑graduate (18+) special‑education program, which supports vocational and independent‑living skill development and activities such as the Cranberry Cafe.

Superintendent Lions introduced Valerie Rufo, a longtime special‑education teacher who described how the Cranberry Cafe gives students hands‑on job skills, menu planning experience and community partnership opportunities. "The Cranberry Cafe provides a wonderful opportunity for students to experience real life hands Hands‑On job skills in a real environment," Rufo said. She described plans to expand the program’s products and services and asked the committee to approve recurring fundraising to support equipment and supplies.

The committee also approved acceptance of multiple donations and fundraising items as part of the consent agenda, including a $1,500 gift from the Lewis family, proceeds from the OAKO yard sale (the superintendent said the OAKO event cleared $40,000), and several student council and class fundraisers. Committee members praised staff and volunteers who support the program.

A separate action item — an out‑of‑district field trip whose details were held confidential in the meeting packet — was moved, seconded and approved unanimously. The meeting then adjourned.
