The Middleborough School Committee voted unanimously Feb. 15 to adopt Draft One of the 2025–26 academic calendar, choosing the option favored by 45% of survey respondents.
Superintendent Carolyn presented results from a community survey of 424 responses that showed 45% support for Draft One and 34.7% for Draft Three. Committee members and school leaders debated returning to school before or after Labor Day, balancing family preferences, earlier June release and concerns about snow-day buffers.
Principal White described the first two teacher days that precede student arrival in some drafts as a useful "soft open" to re-establish routines, conduct drills and complete housekeeping tasks. Committee members raised concerns about placing two days before a long weekend but many echoed the principal’s point that those days help prepare students and teachers.
The committee made a motion and vote to adopt Draft One, which will keep the student start after Labor Day while maintaining the planned professional-development and in-service days described in the calendar documents. The administration said the calendar remains subject to collective-bargaining outcomes and minor PD scheduling changes, and that the public hearing on the budget and the budget vote are scheduled for March meetings.
