District reports 18 open positions; new K-12 literacy director named and full-time SEL teacher posted

The School Committee heard a personnel update Aug. 26 as the district prepared to reopen.
Patty Brown of human resources told the committee "to date we have 18 open positions total," including four teacher openings (Spanish, a technology/computer position, a reading interventionist and an EL teacher), five PAR educator positions, behavior technician roles, cafeteria helpers, custodians and district education center positions. Several hires are in process and some offers were declined, Brown said.
Superintendent announced that Miss Jennifer Ryan has assumed the role of K-12 literacy director after 20 years with the district; Ryan was not present and will attend a future meeting to address the committee.
The committee also reviewed a new MEA job description for a full-time social-emotional learning (SEL) teacher at Wickcom Middle School. Staff said the position, which was included in the FY26 budget, will provide consistent staffing for the school's restorative center and expand continuity of services previously provided through rotating teacher duty periods. "It will be permanently staffed full-time by this person," Angela House, a building principal, said when asked about the connection to the restorative center.
Staff noted the district is preparing recommended staffing adjustments in light of embargoed 2025 MCCAST results; Dr. Scaza and a colleague will present proposed adjustments at the Sept. 9 meeting so changes can be made before the public release.
What happens next: Human resources will continue onboarding and report back on hires; the committee will review the SEL job description and the recommended staffing adjustments at upcoming meetings.
