WS Development told the council it wants to install six public electric-vehicle chargers at Broadway Plaza and needs an easement that will allow National Grid to construct underground conduits to power them. Katherine Campion, representing WS Development, said the chargers would be public and run by Electrify America.
Councilors asked about charger siting, tree removal, whether chargers would be open to the public and whether the equipment would require a special high-capacity connection. Campion answered that the chargers would be "open to the public" and confirmed there would be six charging stalls; she said parking and landscaping adjustments would be made and that some trees could be removed but replanted and additional landscaped islands were planned.
Several councillors urged that National Grid attend in person to answer electrical and permitting questions; because National Grid representatives were delayed by a snowstorm and several councillors had technical questions, the council opened the hearing, took public comment from the property owner and then voted to table the petition until utility staff can appear and provide the requested technical information.
What comes next: The council will repost or reopen the public hearing when National Grid can attend to answer councillors' questions about conduit layout, charger level (level 2 vs. level 3), and permitting requirements.
