Malden Reads picks Our Missing Hearts for One City, One Book 2026; city invited to kickoff and programs

Representatives of Malden Reads presented their 2026 One City, One Book selection, Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng, to the Malden City Council on Jan. 27 and invited the community to a kickoff at the Malden Public Library on Feb. 9.
A presenter described the book’s themes—democratic ideals, the role of words and storytelling, and civic engagement—and outlined companion titles for younger readers and English-language learners. The program will include a citizen’s lyceum series in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for Civic Education, film screenings, school programming, arts exhibitions and community events tied to Malden’s role in the Revolutionary era.
The presenter noted Malden Reads’ 16-year history and that the program had donated thousands of books to Malden Public Schools and the library. They also said the project received a Malden Community Connections Grant and will partner with local organizations including Malden Safe Streets and the high school YMCA leaders.
Councilors thanked the presenters and noted enthusiasm for the lineup; Council President Lahan said the program has become a tradition and commended volunteers. The presentation concluded with applause and a brief photo recess before the council moved to public comment.
Malden Public Library is listed as the fiscal agent for the program and books will be available for checkout; volunteers and community partners will support programming throughout the year.
