Harvard School Committee approves clubs and grants, hears facilities and MSBA updates and moves into executive session

Members also approved five grants from the Harvard Schools Trust totaling $10,572.54 (mover Liz Joyce; second Dr. Katharine Covino) and two PTO grants — an Appleseed Grant and funding for a Wampanoag visit — (mover Liz Joyce; second Amy Morton). Committee members thanked the Harvard Schools Trust and the PTO for their support.
Facilities and operations: Superintendent Dr. Linda Dwight and Director of School Finance and Operations Mandy Ostaszewski reported facilities work: a new elementary-school fence came in under budget at $25,500; a sewage pipe backup and replacement hot-water tanks at Bromfield were addressed; and a mold issue in the cable studio is being remediated with insurance covering the work and containment measures in place, including sealing a staircase to prevent spread. Ms. Ostaszewski and Facilities Director John Tarlach were praised for quick responses.
Capital project: Dr. Dwight reported that the district’s heat-pump conversion and roof repair project has been recommended for approval by the MSBA board at its upcoming meeting; if the MSBA board votes to approve, the district would receive guidance to proceed to the feasibility stage. The town previously approved up to $200,000 to support that phase.
Executive session: At 8:49 p.m., Chair Abigail Besse moved and the committee voted 5-0 to enter executive session to discuss collective bargaining strategy with the Harvard Education Association.
The Shaw Trust furniture request was deferred to the Nov. 10 meeting and no action on that request was taken.
