At its Feb. 3 meeting, the Cordele City Commission approved several routine governance items and set follow-up actions on fees and ordinances.
Appointments: The commission approved nominees for several local boards. Latoya Davis and Kamisha Spears were appointed to the Board of Zoning Appeals; Marleene Kimbell was appointed to the Planning Commission; Jean Oliver Burks to the Historic Preservation Commission; and Lynn Barnes and Dr. Cameron Cy to the Downtown Development Authority. Appointees will be sworn in at the next meeting.
Audit readiness and finance-code changes: Commissioners approved an audit-readiness proposal with Bennett Tax Advisory. On second reading the commission also approved ordinances amending the city charter/code under the Municipal Home Rule Act to transfer responsibility for collection of taxes and fees from the city clerk to the finance director and to grant the finance director authority to execute collection activity.
Mobile food-vendor fees: Commissioners discussed setting a per-visit fee ($30) and an annual permit ($350), but staff and the mayor noted the item had been submitted as a resolution rather than an ordinance and needed revised language; the commission voted to table the item to the next meeting for staff to prepare the correct document.
Personal transportation vehicles: The commission approved first reading of an ordinance updating Chapter 17 to regulate personal transportation vehicles (including golf carts and similar low-speed vehicles), with attorneys and staff noting clerical edits and a required DOT review to determine where crossings of state highways are permitted.
Federal grant award: Separately, the city manager reported Cordele City had been awarded $250,000 in congressional directed spending for the City of Cordele Lift Station Improvements (Kelly Road lift station was the priority submitted); staff will present required federal documents and a budget amendment to accept the funds.
What’s next: Sworn-in dates for appointees, tabling language for the mobile-vendor fee, a DOT review for the transportation ordinance and a forthcoming budget amendment to add $250,000 in directed spending to the water/wastewater capital program.
