Dartmouth School Committee unanimously approves five-year Strategic Plan

Dartmouth, Mass. — The Dartmouth School Committee on Oct. 7 approved a five-year District Strategic Plan designed to guide the district’s work through school year 2028–2029.
The motion to adopt the plan was made by John Nunes and seconded by Kathleen Amaral; it passed unanimously, 5-0. The plan was presented by Dr. June Saba-Maguire, the superintendent, and developed by a Strategic Planning Committee that included instructional staff, students, town officials and community members.
The plan organizes district work around four focus areas — Teaching and Learning; Safe and Supportive Schools; Family and Community Engagement; and Budget and Capital Improvements — and pairs each area with objectives, initiatives, implementation timelines, named leads and measures of success. Dr. Saba-Maguire said the document is grounded in the district’s purpose and aims to represent a shared vision for the “One Dartmouth” community.
Kathleen Smith of the Teaching and Learning Alliance, the consulting firm that supported the planning process, described the document as an inclusive effort and called it "a 'living document' which will likely continue beyond the five years." Dr. Thibault and department directors outlined action steps and success measures for each focus area during the presentation.
Committee members praised the plan’s breadth and recommended small editorial changes. Elizabeth Coughlin asked that acronyms and specialized language be reduced to make the plan more accessible; Nunes recommended adding an acronym key. The committee approved the plan with those minor adjustments.
Superintendent Saba-Maguire and staff said the strategic plan will inform FY26 budget discussions and help prioritize district investments and initiatives. The committee did not take further votes on funding during the meeting; budget details will be reviewed at a subcommittee meeting scheduled for Oct. 28.
The committee’s vote completes the approval step; administration will proceed with the minor edits discussed and begin operational alignment with the document’s timelines and measures.
