Committee reviews speed-sign placement on James Street as traffic rises

At the Jan. 30 Public Works Committee meeting Councilor Mary Beth Pniak-Costello told staff that James Street (from 820 Memorial Drive to Johnson Road) has become busier and residents want better signage and possibly a speed indicator sign.
"There's going to be industrial development on Better Way, which runs off of James Street," Pniak-Costello said, and residents suggested moving a speed indicator closer to the section with heavier traffic.
City Engineer Doug Ellis confirmed the posted speed limit is 30 mph and said staff will check the existing equipment. Assistant DPW Superintendent John Beaulieu said the city installs speed indicator signs by request and advised the council to specify a direct location for evaluation: "If you're looking for another speed indicator sign, tell us a direct location and then we'll know what you want and where you want it," Beaulieu said.
After discussion the committee closed public input and voted to place the request on file so staff can evaluate potential sign placement and feasibility; no immediate installation decision was made.
