Board members and administrators warned that several schools are already near capacity and that an incoming kindergarten cohort could worsen space constraints. Short-term responses discussed included seeking a special appropriation from the board of finance for portables or using capital funds; board members cited rough cost estimates for portables (discussion referenced per-unit and foundation costs totaling roughly $2.0–2.2 million for the options under consideration). The board also discussed whether repurposing space used by the Monroe Early Learning Center daycare (two classrooms) would be feasible, while noting the daycare serves district employees and is an important recruitment/retention tool.
The board is awaiting a final engineering assessment from Michael Horton Associates on the Chalk Hill building to determine whether repairs, replacement of decking and framing, or reinforcement options are feasible. Engineers are testing multiple approaches; the assessment was described as pending midweek delivery.
Next steps noted by the board included awaiting the Chalk Hill assessment, receiving updated demographic data from MP Planning Group, and, if necessary, pursuing capital or special appropriation options to secure classroom space.
