Officials report oil sheen in Denison river; crews and DNR placed booms and absorbents overnight

City staff reported an oil sheen was detected in the river following an earlier incident; the Iowa Department of Natural Resources returned to the site and crews placed additional booms and absorbent pads.
Staff said cleanup crews and multiple city departments were involved in containment work overnight. “We were able to place some additional booms in the river,” the city manager said, and staff remained on‑site to monitor the affected area. The DNR assisted with the investigation; staff noted that investigators initially did not see river impacts earlier in the day but identified residual sheen at approximately 8:15 p.m., prompting additional response measures.
Responders recovered one drone used in the response that malfunctioned. The city reported the drone was damaged when it went off course and later found in a driveway; insurance coverage was noted.
Council heard that the city used some on‑hand supplies and that the DNR and Tri‑County Emergency Management provided additional booms. Staff said they will replace used equipment and keep coordinating with DNR on any ongoing investigation.
