Council accepts Hazel Street sidewalk work and approves alley bids schedule

The Pella City Council accepted the Hazel Street sidewalk project and approved a resolution to solicit bids for an alley reconstruction project between the community center and the library.
Staff told the council the Hazel Street sidewalk project was completed in accordance with city plans and that a quantities reconciliation leaves a final contract amount of $79,616, a modest reduction from the original estimate near $80,700. Staff recommended accepting the public improvements and approving change order number one to reconcile placed materials with contract estimates; the council voted to accept the project.
On the alley project staff presented Resolution 6967 to establish a Jan. 20 public hearing date and to authorize solicitation of bids for reconstruction of the alley between the community center and the library; an engineer’s opinion of probable cost was roughly $371,000 and staff estimated about 50 working days for construction beginning after Tulip Time, with the goal of completion in fall 2026. Council members asked whether the alley work would conflict with an upcoming community center renovation and about underground utilities; the city engineer said underground work is minimal and will include a storm‑sewer intake tying roof drains into existing storm infrastructure.
Council voted unanimously to approve both the final acceptance for the Hazel Street project and to move forward with the alley solicitation and hearing date.
