At its meeting the Mashpee School Committee approved several formal actions and took up major policy and facilities updates.
Budget: Staff presented a FY26 packet and said the town manager requested the district consider $150,000 in reductions. Presenter Miss Lopes told the committee the district planned to offset that request with an increase in the anticipated circuit‑breaker reimbursement (about $97,000) and reduced retirementexpense projections (approximately $53,000), which together would cover the $150,000 adjustment while leaving staffing and supply lines intact. The presenter said the adjustments bring the FY26 budget to a figure the packet records and that the budget represents about a 3.9% increase over last year. The committee voted to accept the budget adjustments as presented.
Graduation/competency policy: The policy subcommittee presented a first read of proposed language combining the district's graduation requirements with a competency determination. Members discussed setting a district benchmark for competency and debated cutoffs used by neighboring districts; the committee discussed a 65% average in specified courses and qualifying MCAS/MCAST results as the district's bridge standard pending statewide work by a governor-appointed task force. No final adoption occurred; members asked to review edited language and scheduled a second read.
Policies, personnel and contracts: The committee dispensed with a first read of a housekeeping policy and adopted Policy KVG (Parent Advisory Council). It approved an updated library media specialist job description that had been vetted with the teachers' union. The committee also approved a one‑year extension of Dr. Gregory Parkinson’s school‑physician consultant contract; a memo attached to the packet noted Dr. Parkinson has served the district since 1995 and the extension gives time to recruit a successor.
Facilities and student engagement: Staff reported they are awaiting air‑quality results for the high school athletic wing; if acceptable, the gym could be used for games early next week while locker rooms and ceiling repairs continue. Members asked staff to follow up on a malfunctioning outdoor sign that has been out of service for three weeks. The student-advisory committee election timeline was announced and staff discussed plans to ensure student participation in upcoming interviews if student representatives are available.
The meeting closed after additional housekeeping and scheduling items. Several items (notably the competency/graduation language) will return to the committee for further consideration at a subsequent meeting.
