Superintendent reports new PD approach, staffing hires and small enrollment dip

On Oct. 16, Dr. H briefed the Mashpee School Committee on professional development, staffing and enrollment.
Dr. H said the district is changing PD offerings so unit A and B members can choose the training they attend, with local staff running many sessions. She highlighted restorative-practices training led by Kelvin Oliver and said the goal is to pair accountability with repair when students violate the code of conduct.
Dr. H reported staffing updates: the district secured Winnie Johnson Graham as Indian education coordinator and hired several long-term substitutes while continuing to recruit for an English-language long-term substitute and a high-school paraprofessional role. On enrollment, Dr. H said October counts show the district is down about 49 students from last year’s October figure (from roughly 1,452 to about 1,403), numbers that inform Chapter 70 funding projections.
The director of finance also briefed the committee on budget-to-actual lines. The committee was told that special-education expenses include an estimated $65,000 for school psychologist consulting and that technology and curriculum lines may be offset later by school-choice revenue adjustments. Members requested additional FY26 budget details ahead of hearings and the January vote.
The superintendent noted upcoming events (Native American month planning with the tribal education department, school choice slot counts, early release dates for parent-teacher conferences) and asked the committee to expect further PD and budget reports at future meetings.
