City Manager Richard Newbern distributed the City of Cochran's draft FY2025/26 budget at the April 8 council meeting, outlining fund totals and several proposed fee adjustments ahead of scheduled budget work sessions.
The draft lists the General Fund at $4,865,000; Water and Sewer Fund at $2,415,300 (similar to the prior year); the Gas Fund at $964,000 (up from $773,900 last year); and the Solid Waste/Garbage Fund at $1,030,000 (a 5.7% increase). The draft proposes no tax increase and keeps the millage rate at 10.875 mills.
Fee and personnel changes in the draft include a 2.5% increase to water and sewer fees, a 5% adjustment to solid waste fees, adjustments to fire and stormwater fees, moving the cemetery technician position into the city clerk's office and funding a deputy city clerk position. Newbern said the council would discuss the budget at a work session on April 28 and target formal adoption for June 10.
Council members asked for additional materials and opportunities for review; Council Member Carla Coley specifically requested informational materials about the city's housing rehabilitation program for distribution to residents. No formal vote on the budget occurred on April 8.
