Council keeps 'Cochran Community Park' name after debate over donor recognition and resident concerns

The Cochran City Council rejected a motion to rescind its September 2024 action naming the new park and instead voted 5–1 May 13 to let the park remain "Cochran Community Park." The discussion followed public comment from Josete Scott, who said Mary Pitts — who has advocated for a park for more than 10 years — was being overlooked in private planning meetings, and asked about grant funding for nearby walkways.
City Manager Richard Newbern explained that the September 2024 vote to name the park "Cochran Community Park" was valid and that rescinding it would be required to change the name. Council Member Carla Coley urged recognition for Mary Pitts and cited other local spaces named for contributors; Council Member Shane Savant and others noted that the land donor, Earl Arnold, will be honored with a bronze plaque regardless of the park name.
Council Member Gary Ates moved to let the park name remain and the motion passed 5–1 (Coley opposed). The council did not adopt a new name; staff noted plaque recognition would proceed as planned.
