Heritage commission outlines Trailhead Campus display plan; council to seek Park & Rec review

Ely, Minn. — The Heritage Preservation Commission presented a plan for the Ely Regional Trailhead Campus aimed at showcasing five area trails, improving visitor access and creating flexible community space.
Margaret Egan said the objectives are to treat the facility as a campus — with activities both inside and outside the building — to prioritize authenticity and ADA accessibility, and to add technology such as QR codes and a monitor or touchscreen to connect visitors to existing trail information. She described three display options for the main entry: large photos with QR codes, a 15‑slide rotating monitor (moderate cost), or a touchscreen (most expensive and requiring technical support). Egan also suggested adding interior seating, directional signage to restrooms and the chamber office, relocating brochure and vending fixtures to improve flow, and phased exterior additions such as grills, a covered picnic pavilion, bike repair stations and a dog station.
Egan recommended that the City Council designate an advisory board — for example the Park & Rec Board — to oversee the Trailhead Campus and provide annual recommendations; Lahtonen and Bisbee asked that Park & Rec review the plan. When asked about cost estimates, Egan said the design team had not yet developed a budget. Council members praised the presentation and encouraged further review by staff and Park & Rec before the council considers implementation steps.
