The Salem Township Board of Supervisors voted Aug. 21 to submit a "Broadband Ready Communities" application designed to prepare the township to receive state broadband funding when it becomes available.
Supervisor Kerry Jobe said the designation begins a formal process the township must follow to be eligible for grant programs, including announcing the program in public meetings, managing permitting for easements and adopting related resolutions. Supervisor Bob Zundel said the designation is intended to make the township ready for funding and implementation where broadband service does not yet exist.
Resident Lisa Segina asked what the designation provides. Supervisors cited procedural requirements and said the state has received about $1.6 billion from federal American Rescue Plan Act allocations for broadband programs; the township’s actions are intended to position Salem to compete for those funds when they are awarded.
The board voted unanimously to authorize the application and related public-notice steps. There was no final commitment of matching funds or construction timelines recorded in the minutes; supervisors said more work will follow as funding opportunities and specific project proposals arise.
The township said information about the Broadband Ready program will be posted on the township website and that required public notices will be issued as the application process proceeds.
