Architects present updated designs; board reviews schedule and alternates for Lgrand, Laurel and Gilman

Architects from FB Design and consultants from FH presented updated designs and site sequencing for the district's three-site facilities program, and the board discussed cost-saving alternates and schedule choices that will affect bidding and phasing.
Design highlights: FB Design's Nick Massman and Brady Daniel showed a cohesive material palette to tie new additions to existing brickwork, proposed collaborative "glass-box" learning spaces, increased natural light in corridors, and flexible media-center and esports-capable spaces. District representatives noted an emphasis on acoustical ceiling treatments and floor patterns intended for wayfinding at the elementary site.
Technical constraints: the consultants identified a potential electrical-service shortage at Laurel. They said the existing transformer capacity may not support planned HVAC or mechanical loads for the addition, requiring either an upgrade or lighter mechanical systems (PTAC units, alternative HVAC approaches). The fire marshal permitted the Laurel addition to be built without a sprinkler system only if the gym is posted with a 299-occupant maximum; that variance avoids an estimated $750,000 cost of full water-service replacement.
Gilman sequencing and alternates: architects proposed a reduced Gilman multi-purpose room (saved roughly 1,200 sq ft) as the base option and kept the larger 5,250-sq-ft version as an alternate. Consultants recommend abatement beginning mid-September and demolition in October so soils can settle during winter and the addition can proceed in spring; that sequencing lowers winter concrete protections and related costs.
Site/access priorities: the team offered an alternate to extend the Lgrand parking lot west and build a bus loop to improve drop-off/pickup safety; trustees signaled that a bus loop/parking alternate may be a higher priority than expanding the Gilman multi-purpose footprint.
What's next: board members kept large alternates available to review during bidding; staff and the design team will refine electrical-design options, produce bid packages for early work, and coordinate JMC/system conversions for the two-building model once Gilman demolition and reconfiguration occur.
