Demorest council approves Scout Hut lease, probation contract and small sponsorships; tables Habersham Partnership invoice

Demorest — At its Dec. 3 regular session, the Demorest City Council approved several routine administrative and community items, and tabled a $5,000 invoice from the Habersham Partnership for Growth for later review.
Mayor Jerry Harkness sought council action to move forward with a Trail Life lease for the Scout Hut. Councilman Donnie Bennett moved to proceed with a lease agreement drafted by the city attorney; Councilman Andrew Ferguson seconded the motion and the council approved it unanimously (4-0).
Councilman Shawn Allen moved to table a $5,000 invoice from the Habersham Partnership for Growth so he could follow up with Charlie Fiveash and Rope Roberts; Councilman Ferguson seconded and the motion to table passed 4-0.
The council accepted a probation contract (moved by Councilman Jimmy Davis, seconded by Councilman Ferguson) and voted to sponsor the Soque River Watershed Association for $2,000 (moved by Councilman Shawn Allen, seconded by Councilman Donnie Bennett). The City of Civility resolution was renewed (fee $100) on a unanimous vote.
Council also adopted a county-provided resolution asking the city to participate in a county fire study; the council designated the City Manager and the Fire Chief as the city’s representatives. The council approved opening two new bank accounts to aid bookkeeping, with signers Shawn Allen, Mark Musselwhite and Mayor Jerry Harkness.
During the public-comment portion, resident Marie Evans (101 Long Street) asked, “When will the zoning map be complete?” and said she was having difficulty locating the new zoning ordinance on the city website. She also asked whether any filings had been made with the city regarding the Johnny Gunn property across from her home. The minutes record no immediate response to those specific questions.
City Manager Mark Musselwhite provided department updates: a completed fire chief certification by Chief Scheuerer, reopening of the gym after donated goals, delayed leaf pickup, an upcoming tree-lighting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., a Santa photo-op Saturday (1–5 p.m.) to raise funds for Shop with a Hero, an LMIG update and the Wreaths Across America ceremony on Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. The council reviewed October financials and acknowledged a paid sewer-bore performance charge.
