Pella council awards contract for municipal airport apron expansion after bids come in below estimate

The Pella City Council on a unanimous voice vote approved plans and awarded a construction contract for an apron expansion at Pella Municipal Airport, staff said.
City staff told the council the low bid from TK Concrete was just under $446,000 and the high bid was about $568,000 — both below the engineer's estimate of $615,000. "We did receive a grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation for this project," staff member Mike said, estimating the DOT grant at approximately $237,000 and the city's financial share at roughly $29,000. Staff recommended final completion around Sept. 25.
Mayor Ward opened the public hearing on the project and, after questions from council members about the contractor timeline and hangar construction, the council closed the hearing and approved Resolution No. 7014 (adopting plans, specifications, form of contract and cost estimate) and Resolution No. 7015 (making the award of the construction contract).
The votes were taken by roll call and the motions passed with all members present voting in favor. Staff said it will proceed to finalize contract documents and administer the grant requirements.
The council did not raise objections to the contract award; staff will return with any final contract documents and a project schedule as required by the grant terms.
